Mutahi Kahiga To Be Sworn In Following The Demise Of Nyeri Governor
Nyeri Deputy governor Mutahi Kahiga will be the new governor for the next 60 days.Job Opportunity-Plan International
Mutahi is set to be sworn into office following the death of the then Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru today morning.
Kahiga is expected to take oath of office immediately to avoid vacuum in Nyeri leadership in accordance with the provisions of Article 182 (2) of the Constitution,according to Lawyer Wahome Gikonyo.See Also:Over 600,000 KCSE Candidates Start 2017 Tests Today
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will declare the governor’s position vacant and conduct a by-election within 60 days.where the contest will be open to all candidates.
Until then,Mr Mutahi Kahiga will take the office unless otherwise where the speaker can also takes over and acts as governor for 60 days as the polls agency prepares for a fresh poll.Also See:NASA Announces Boycott of Safaricom,Bidco and Brookside
If he takes the office however,Mr.Mutahi will not have to appoint a new deputy.
Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru on Tuesday morning died at Thika Level 5 Hospital following a grisly road accident.
Council of Governors was in the process of airlifting Wahome to Nairobi Hospital before he passed away.
Gakuru, 51,was heading to the capital for talk shows with a vernacular radio and TV accompanied when his vehicle veered off the road and hit a guard rail near Kabati on the Thika-Muranga highway.
Governor’s car had four occupants at the time of the crash— him, his personal assistant Albert Kaguru , his body guard Ahmed Abdi and the driver, Mr Samuel Kinyanjui Wanyaga,according to the nation. Read Also:NHIF Beneficiaries Will Now Access Any Hospital Without Adding An Extra Coin
The personal assistant’s right hand and leg are broken and police were still looking for his wrist at the scene of the crash.The bodyguard’s legs were seriously injured while the driver is okay.
Police attributed the crash to a “tyre burst during heavy downpour.”Witnesses said the Governor and his driver were trapped in his Mercedes Benz for close to an hour before they pulled him and other occupants out of the car.
Gakuru was the new governor of Nyeri county after winning in the 2017 general election beating his opponent with a big margin of votes.

His death came as one of his three sons sat for his Form Four national exams at Alliance Boys High School in Nairobi.
Gakuru was a lecturer at the School of Business, University of Nairobi since 1994. He holds a doctorate in Public Administration and Policy from Arizona State University, the United States.
He was a member of The National Alliance Party since 2013 before moving on to Jubilee Alliance later.
The late was governor aspirant in the 2013 general election where he lost to the late Nderitu Gachagua.
