Holidays are great moments for every individual, young and old. Forget about all holidays and focus on Easter whenever you are sharing to a South Church young adult. While many see it as a time to join with family and relatives, these young souls take this time to bond, share and have some special time for themselves probably away from the city in what they unanimously call “enjoying youthful stage in the Lord”.

Such events have been always there, but this year’s retreat beat them all. In case you missed all is not lost. A Kenya Current reporter – Leah Kabindu is taking you step by step through the four-day trip that saw these young adults camp at Mount Kenya, 215 kilometers from Nairobi city. Sit  and scroll!

The Journey Has Just Began- Hephziba,73

A rough estimate of four hour journey from South Church on 30th March Friday morning gave the local tourists a first stop in Central Kenya’s Laikipia County for the first destination in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, situated on the equator west of Nanyuki, between the foothills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow-capped Mount Kenya.

The 90,000-acre not-for-profit wildlife conservancy  rich in wildlife gave the young  a chance  to interact with the astounding variety of animals, including the Big Five (the endangered black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion), Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, cheetah among other habitats including predators and endangered species and the sweet flow of the Ewaso Ngiro river.

The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains of Ol Pejeta and the  amazing wildlife viewing on good all-weather roads created lasting memories. The chimpanzees in the sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary including the famous Poko  gave unforgettable experience  as they got time to dance and crack jokes with these awesome creatures.

Day 1

Day 1: Briefing before visiting Chimpanzees sanctuary

The day ended with an arrival at the camp site at the sun set where pitching of tents began with the help of the leaders and the experienced master guide brother Nelson Ogallo and Mc Kenzie. There was nice cooperation in preparation of supper from part of the team as the rest collected firewood and lit fire that was re-lit  every evening to help keep away some animals and for warmth purposes.

2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Day 2

Day 2

The Sabbath was more of adventure that saw the adventuresome youths wake up from tents, conduct lesson discussion on open field and the sermon under tents. A normal sabbath program was adopted in the morning service with the youth choir giving a powerful presentation climaxed by pastor Paul Mwangi’s “Facing the Red Sea Crisis” and an interactive  relationship talk in the evening.

The day was crowned with a visit at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and an evening talk from a Health specialist  as well as  a communication talk from mom Mrs. Ontiri.

Sunday began with health talks and wide topics were covered including the killer diseases and their treatments. Notes from health talks are available upon inquiry through the leadership.Master guide brothers gave tips for mountain climbing as the brakes provided time for short races and some photo sessions. The day was climaxed by an afternoon drive after the unfortunate loss of chance to visit Borana ranch. Football and other games dominated evening upon the return.

Day 3, health talk

Day 3, health talk

Monday was the mother of all days as the youngsters couldn’t wait for the hike. The climb began after a short drive to the starting ground and the highest that the tough climbers reached was 3000m. Despite the rain challenge, the hike was great and it marked the end of the four day trip as everyone embacked on parking and unpitching tents before a departure in the evening.
