Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has survived impeachment over Kenyatta National Hospital scandal after the motion seeking to have her removed from the office was withdrawn.

Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi, who sponsored the motion, on Thursday withdrew it and sought her ouster. Deputy President William Ruto intervened by directing National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale to have the motion which was to be discussed next wek Friday dropped.

The heated debate comes after the legislatures signed the motion by Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi on grounds of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Ms Kariuki was accused of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The accusers further claimed that Ms Kariuki had displayed “arrogance and lack of respect for elected leaders” during previous interactions with them.

Ms Kariuki had also been accused of arbitrarily suspending the CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital Lily Koros after surgery was done on the wrong patient. However, the CS defended herself insisting that the KNH board resolved to suspend Koros following public outrage.

The legislatures also claimed the CS interfered with the recruitment process of the chief executive officer of the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA).

The dismissal motion filed in parliament Wednesday with over 170 signatures of MPs had raised stakes for her survival.

Mr Duale said the accusations against the CS were not serious and would be addressed internally, adding that they had serious issues to deal with at the moment including including budget, food security and devolution.
