The ‘Metamorphosis’ of N’Golo Kante

N’Golo Kante, perhaps the outstanding midfielder of his type in the world, having started his football career with JS Suresnes, an amateur club in west  Paris, Kanté did not get picked up by a professional club, Boulogne, until he was 19.

The happy-go-lucky midfielder, made his debut on the final day of the Ligue 2 season in 2012 before making his breakthrough in the third tier the following season. He then spent two years at Caen, helping them to promotion and then survival in Ligue 1.

After having a successful season with Caen in the 2014-15 season, he got an offer to join Marseille, one of the most elite clubs in his home country but instead chose to go to Leicester City, a team that was still struggling at the time. The Frenchman later moved to Chelsea a year later, when Chelsea was neither a media darling nor many football fans’ second team.

He has been described as the best defensive midfielder in the English Premier League due to his prowess in winning   balls, his strength, his positioning in games and his hard work. He also has the ability to start offensive attacks, an attribute that has mainly been notable when Maurizio Sarri took over at Chelsea.

Achievements

Former manager, Antonio Conte always hailed praises towards him, describing him as a complete midfielder. The most notable thing about the French midfielder is winning the premier league with two different clubs in two consecutive years. He has also won the world cup with France in 2018. However, despite starting every single game at the tournament, Kanté was too shy to ask to hold the trophy.

When asked about the trophy afterwards, a shy Kanté replied: “It is quite heavy and very shiny.”

When it comes to personal achievements, his main would probably be in the nomination for FIFA Ballon d’Or in two consecutive years, taking 8th place in 2017 and 11th place last year.

Quick, tenacious and intelligent, Kante is so much more than a sitting midfielder who patrols a small area of the field. The Frenchman is set to prove he has several more strings to his bow than were previously assumed.
