According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the most common illness worldwide and the leading cause of disability. They estimate that 350 million people are affected by depression, globally.

However, research shows that depression is common in women than it is in men.

So, can you avoid depression? Well, life has its own share of concerns that can drastically change the moods of human beings. Life events, such as bereavement, produce mood changes that can usually be distinguished from the features of depression.

On the contrary, causes of depression are not fully understood but are likely to be a complex combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psycho-social factors.

How you can avoid depression

The most common and sure way to avoid depression is to first accept the situation as it is and avoid your triggers as much as you can. Generally, various natural techniques and lifestyle changes can help to manage depression.

  1. Avoid stress

While stress is healthy, extreme levels of it can result into depression. It is critical to try managing and addressing stressful situations when they arise.

  1. Exercise regularly

Keeping your body physically fit improves your mental health big time. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise can help in the treatment and prevention of depression in several key ways such as, increasing your body temperature, which can have a calming effect on the central nervous system, and releasing chemicals like endorphins, which can boost mood.

  1. Diet

The right types of foods will have your brain functioning to its full capacity. In fighting depression, food habits such as avoiding trans fats found in processed meat, ready meals, cookies, and cakes as well as eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can help in avoiding depression.

  1. Sleep

Sleeping is relaxing the body and the mind. Not getting enough sleep has a significant impact on your body. However, depression can also cause insomnia, but there are techniques people can try in order to get more sleep naturally such as creating a bedtime routine.

  1. Talking therapy

Like the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem half solved. When you open up to a confidant, you somehow feel relieved. A doctor or psychiatrist can help identify what kind of therapy may be most beneficial to an individual diagnosed with depression. Often people find it easier talking to a trained stranger, such as a counselor or therapist, than they do talking to family and friends.
