Global Investigative Journalism Conference 2017 underway in South Africa

It is big and truly global. Over 1200 delegates from across the world convened at South Africa’s Witwatersrand University for the biannual Global Investigative Journalism Conference. The conference is high powered with renowned speakers from across the world.

Over ten Kenyan journalists were among the delegates that also featured four Kenyan speakers.
The latest digital tools for investigative journalists were unveiled with speaker after speaker tipping delegates on how to hack it in the media industry. Much emphasis was also given to data driven journalism. See full program.
The Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC17) is co-hosted and organized by the Global Investigative Journalism Network and the Wits Journalism Programme of the University of the Witwatersrand, with the support of programme’s Investigative Journalism Workshop and the University of of the Witwatersrand. This year’s conference incorporates the 12th African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC2017), an annual event hosted by Wits Journalism.

Kenya’s Africa Uncensored CEO John Allan Namu was slated to speak in one of the session but he did not make after he failed to acquire a visa in good time due to other international engagements.
Mohammed Ali of the famous Jicho Pevu and now a member of parliament in Kenya was also present.
Other Kenyans present include this writer who is also the head of communication and media trainer at the Media Council of Kenya, Winnie Kamau, President of the Freelancers Association of Kenya, Sam Muniu (Africa uncensored), Francis Ontomwa (KTN), Michael Mosota (Nation Media Group’s Deputy Chief Graphic desiner) and Patrick Mayoyo.
Kassim Mohamed Africa Uncensored Investigative reporter, Mohamed Ali Member of Kenyan Parliament (Nyali) & former Kenya Television Network Reporter, Chief investigations editor, Catherine Gicheru International Center For Journalists- Country Lead, Code for Kenya & Knight International Journalism Fellow, are among speakers at this year’s Global Investigative Journalism Conference held between November 16-19 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Selected journalists from across the world also attended the conference.
