The Society is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic persons to fill the following position:

Senior Communications Officer

Overall Purpose

Reporting to the Public Relations and Communications Manager, the Senior Communications Officer will be responsible for the effective design, development, implementation and evaluation of effective communications strategies aimed at enhancing collaborative partnerships between the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), partners and donors while promoting the KRCS image, in order to create goodwill and build credibility. Other responsibilities include effective media relations and campaigns aimed at creating public awareness on KRCS role in addressing developmental and emergency issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Promote Conflict Sensitive Communication Approaches (CSCA).
 Study the objectives, promotional policies and needs of the KRCS and partners/donors to develop communication strategies that will influence public opinion.
 Implement communications strategies and policies aimed at advancing the KRCS engagement, positioning KRCS as a leader in professional standards that enhance the integrity of the programmes.
 Maintain effective media relations, establish and maintain regular contact with media representatives and also promptly respond to requests for information from the media, other stakeholders and the general public in order to promote the KRCS image and reputation.
 Gather, edit and package communication materials and other publications, including publicity materials, posters, fact-sheets, speeches, brochures, internet webpages and other publications for internal and external audiences, including employees, communities, stakeholders and the general public.
 Coordinate the development, production and delivery of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials, including publications.
 Raise awareness, through all available communication tools and channels, on findings of underlying drivers of conflict, as would be available research reports, findings and policy briefs.
 Work closely with the KRCS technical teams, to promote key messages on social cohesion and peace building, draw crowds in markets to participate in rallies and barazas, engage in one-on-one dialogues and propose solutions.
 Coordinate with team members to source for key youth to act as peace ambassadors in their communities as part of the initiative.
 Conduct sensitization and awareness sessions through media roundtables, press briefings, media interviews, opinion editorials and articles.
 Produce audio-visual materials using videos and photos and distribute to various audiences.
 Monitor the implementation of communication initiatives to identify, capture and document, innovative approaches and best practices for purposes of disseminating and sharing experiences to promote repeat applications or scaling-up in different community settings within Kenya and globally.
 Participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement and evaluate strategic management plans and budgets, in order to improve performance standards of the communication effort and the programme in general.
 Strengthen partnerships and networks with stakeholders, to ensure smooth implementation of the KRCS projects.
 Represent the KRCS at meetings, conferences and workshops and other platforms to promote communication initiatives and articulate issues related to KRCS engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
 Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications or related field.
 Over five (5) years demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective corporate communications programmes.
 Experience in Preventive Communication Strategies (PCS) will be an added advantage.
 Those with experience in working in conflict prone areas and/or in working with Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE) are highly encouraged.  Demonstrated knowledge of digital media and story development.

Key Competencies

 Project Management skills and/or experience.
 Ability to compose and produce a variety of communications materials and website updates for release to media and other stakeholders.
 Ability to use computer software packages and internet formatting languages.
 Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the media, government officials, employees, donors, stakeholders and the general public.
 Working knowledge of mass media operation and its proper utilization for dissemination of information.  Strong capacity for data collection and analysis, as well as report writing.
 Report writing, Proposal writing, Research, Speech writing, Subediting, Project appraisal.
 Ability to communicate and make presentations to special interest groups, donors, development partners, stakeholders and the general public.
 Operating knowledge of information and communication equipment, such as all types of cameras, sound systems, multi-media projectors etc.
 Ability to conduct media research and to provide practical training in communication strategies, methods and techniques to staff and other stakeholders.
 Ability to provide practical training in communication strategies, methods and techniques.
 Ability to monitor project against milestones, double-checks the accuracy of information to discover weakness and strive for high quality performance.
 Strong organizational skills, analytical abilities and initiative to prioritize and complete tasks.
