Sexual consent; consent given or not?

According to Planned Parenthood , sexual consent is an agreement to participate in a sexual activity. Before being sexual with someone, you need to know if they want to be sexual with you too. It’s also important to be honest with your partner about what you want and don’t want.

In Africa countries such as Nigeria have their consent age at 11years while Angola has it at 12years. This two are at the lowest while the rest range in between 13 years to 19 years of age.

In Kenya, teenage pregnancies have made headlines in the recent past and proved a tough time for the education sector in the wake of exams. Sexual consent in Kenya has been at 18 years and an intended drop to 16 years has caused uproar with some supporting it while others think it is a turn in the wrong direction.

Without consent then the sexual intercourse is termed as an assault or violence. In Kenya sexual offenses are punished differently and in the case of a victim under the age of ten years the punishment is life imprisonment. For victims between the ages of eleven to fourteen years punishment exceeds twenty years while in the case of a fourteen or eighteen year old then imprisonment is not less than fifteen years.

Consent is therefore important, saying yes and agreeing to something does not mean that they agree to something else. This is to mean that consent should be obtained in case both parties are moving on to something else. Pressuring someone to change their mind is not consent at all. Consent is not given by one who is under the influence of alcohol or any other drug.
